What can RFID be used for? There are no limits really. RFID is used to track goods and assets such as tools and vehicles in industry, and it has revolutionized inventory control. Same technology can be used to track pets and other animals, such as herring and mackerel, and even ants and bees. Access control in events along with cashless payment is becoming very popular; hotel keys and public transport tickets use RFID nowadays. Whatever has been done by traditional means, RFID can do better. As the technology becomes even cheaper and more widely available, new opportunities for smart solutions pop up constantly, for example in marketing applications.

How do I choose the correct RFID chip? The main differences between chip types are their memory size and the frequency they use. The frequency used affects performance, as well as price. Low frequency chips are slower to read and have a shorter read range, but thanks to longer wavelength they penetrate water and obstacles better. Higher frequency chips allow better encryption to be used, so for applications where preventing hacking is critical, such as cashless payment, this should be taken into consideration. In most applications it is generally advisable to use a chip that has just enough memory capacity for the intended use, so that costs are kept as low as possible, especially when volumes are large. The chip type however is not the only aspect that determines its performance; the whole tag needs to be well-thought-out to suit its intended use.

What’s the difference between NFC and RFID?In short, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is the generic term for the process of identifying items using radio waves, and Near Field Communication (NFC) is a set of communication protocols that use RFID and operates in the high frequency band on the radio frequency spectrum. You could say that every NFC is RFID, but not all RFID is NFC. But don't. That doesn't make any sense. NFC is a globally used standard for communication that uses a specific frequency (13.56 MHz), NFC tags are relatively inexpensive and can be read with many modern smartphones, so they are easily applied for many uses and can be used virtually everywhere.

Can you do the encoding for the products at the factory?Yes, we can! The products will be delivered with your specific formatting or encoding.

What should I take into consideration when choosing a tag?The tag comprises of the chip (integrated circuit), an antenna, and possibly an enclosure. The size of the antenna affects the reading distance, which means that the bigger the tag, the longer the range. The tag enclosure needs to suit its intended use. Firstly, it must be as durable as needed. Sometimes durability is not a goal though, for example when a tamper-proof anti-theft sticker is required. When a long-lasting tag is wanted, then its better to choose one of our water and impact proof materials. A card that doesn’t need to last for very long or endure harsh conditions can be made of cardboard to reduce costs. The intended use may also require some special features from the tag. For example, when attached on a metal surface, a special on-metal tag must be used, so that the metal doesn’t interfere with the reading of the tag. The attachment of the tag also needs to be thought out; will an adhesive do, or should there be holes for screws or a lanyard.

I want to implement RFID in my business – can NordicNFC help me with that? That depends on your business – most likely you will need a system provider to implement the changes needed to benefit from RFID technology. If you simply want to encode some data on a chip, for example a website or other contact information that can be read on a smartphone, that’s quite easy to do if you have any basic knowledge of how RFID works. Encoding NFC chips can be done on a smartphone, so you can prepare a small batch of blank chips yourself if you feel adventurous. Whatever your business needs may be please check if our current NFC partners can help or email our sales with your questions.
